At least 41 people were killed and around 100 injured in a crowd crush on September 27, 2025, during a political rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode highway. About 27,000 people had gathered, far exceeding the 10,000 permitted capacity.

The crush occurred when crowds surged toward Vijay's convoy after his arrival was delayed by nearly seven hours. Tamil Nadu Police filed an FIR against TVK leaders. The Supreme Court later ordered a CBI probe and constituted a retired judge-led oversight panel.
