Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was designated a Global Champion for Road Safety by the United Nations on February 24, 2026. The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, launched the Indian leg of the #MakeASafetyStatement campaign in New Delhi.

Digital billboards featuring the campaign were displayed across New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. India's road traffic crashes claim approximately 1,53,972 lives annually with a death rate of 15.4 per 1,00,000 population. The campaign promotes seat belt use, helmet wearing, speed limits, avoiding phone use while driving, and respecting pedestrians. The initiative targets 80 countries and 1,000 cities by end-2026.
