The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change told Parliament, based on Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) estimates, that India generated 12,54,286.55 tonnes of e-waste in FY 2023-24 and 13,97,955.59 tonnes in FY 2024-25. The share of e-waste collected, dismantled and recycled or disposed rose from 61.94% in FY 2023-24 to 70.71% in FY 2024-25.

The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 have been in force since April 1, 2023. They require producers, manufacturers, recyclers and refurbishers to register on the CPCB portal, enable exchange of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificates, and provide for verification, audit and environmental compensation. Earlier claims about 2.2 million tonnes in 2025, 65 cities producing 60%, only 322 formal units, over half of e-waste remaining informal, and 76-80% of informal workers suffering chronic bronchitis and asthma are not supported by current authoritative CPCB/PIB data and have been removed.
