The Government of India notified the Rules for 'Sustainable Harnessing of Fisheries in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)' on November 4, 2025, coming into wider public discussion by November 8. The rules aim to unlock the potential of India's 11,099 km coastline and 2.02 million sq km EEZ.

Key provisions include: priority to fishermen cooperative societies and Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs); a fully digital 'Access Pass' system via the ReALCRaft portal; a ban on harmful practices like LED light fishing, pair trawling, and bull trawling; prohibition on foreign vessels; and a mother-and-child vessel model for Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands, which account for 49% of India's EEZ. The initiative benefits over 50 lakh fishers nationwide.
