The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced on October 22–23, 2025 the deployment of Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) equipped with 3D laser sensors, 360-degree high-resolution cameras, DGPS, IMU, and DMI across 23 states, covering 20,933 km of national highways. The NSVs automatically detect road defects — cracks, potholes, and patches — without human intervention. All collected data is uploaded to NHAI's AI-based 'Data Lake' portal for expert analysis. Surveys will be conducted before project commencement and at six-month intervals thereafter. The initiative aligns with India's push for data-driven, technology-enabled infrastructure management.
