Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared Kerala 'extreme poverty-free' on November 1, 2025, on Kerala Piravi Day. Through the Extreme Poverty Eradication Programme, Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) identified 64,006 extremely poor families across the state and implemented micro-plans tailored to each household's needs.

Interventions included community kitchens serving 20,600+ families, housing for 4,005 homeless families, and the 'Avakasam Athivegam' campaign. Kerala, which once had close to 60% poverty rate, now has incomes over 50% higher than the national average. The World Bank's extreme poverty threshold is less than $3/day at 2021 PPP.
