Indian Air Force Decommissions MiG-21 Fighter Jets After 62 Years of Service
The Indian Air Force officially decommissioned its iconic MiG-21 fighter jets on September 26, 2025, at a ceremony held at Air Force Station Chandigarh — the same city where the aircraft was first inducted in 1963. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, CDS General Anil Chauhan, and all three service chiefs attended the farewell ceremony of 23 Squadron ('Panthers').
Over 850 MiG-21s served the IAF across multiple conflicts including the 1971 war, the Kargil conflict, the 2019 Balakot airstrike, and Operation Sindoor. The aircraft served as interceptor, ground-attack platform, air defence jet, and trainer. The decommissioned jets will form part of IAF's heritage wing for airshows and commemorative events. The MiG-21's retirement symbolizes India's transition toward indigenous platforms — the LCA Tejas and the upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
