National Forest Martyrs Day: Tribute to Khejarli Massacre of 1730 in Rajasthan
National Forest Martyrs Day was observed on September 11, 2025 at the Forester Memorial, FRI, Dehradun. The day commemorates the Khejarli Massacre of 1730 in Rajasthan, when 363 Bishnoi villagers led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi sacrificed their lives protecting Khejri trees from being cut down on orders of Maharaja Abhai Singh of Jodhpur.
Amrita Devi and her three daughters were among the first to embrace the trees and be killed. The movement inspired the later Chipko Movement of the 1970s. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has declared September 11 as National Forest Martyrs Day. The Bishnoi community's 29 principles, established by Guru Jambheshwar in 1485, include strict environmental protection.
