India's biotechnology sector has witnessed explosive growth, with biotech startups expanding from just 50 in 2014 to over 10,000 by October 2025. The sector has 94 incubators across 25 states. India supplies 60% of global immunisation doses, making it the world's pharmacy. The government has set a target of $300 billion bioeconomy by 2030.

However, a funding gap persists — India attracted $3 billion in biotech investment during 2023-25, compared to China's $12 billion. Over 40% of biotech PhDs emigrate for overseas opportunities. BIRAC's BioNEST network with over 100 incubators spanning 10.45 lakh sq ft has supported the development of more than 900 products and creation of 35,000 jobs. Rajasthan is emerging as a biotech hub with BIRAC-supported incubators at Rajasthan University and IIT Jodhpur.
