8.1 Types of Punishment — Section 4

Under Section 4, punishments for offences are:

1. Death — reserved for most heinous crimes (murder with premeditation, gang rape of minor)
2. Imprisonment for life — actual life imprisonment (14 years minimum before remission, now courts specify "remainder of natural life" in serious cases)
3. Rigorous imprisonment — with hard labour
4. Simple imprisonment — without compulsory labour
5. Forfeiture of property — relevant in organised crime, terrorism
6. Fine — monetary penalty
7. Community service — NEW; for petty offences
