Offences Affecting Public Order

9.1 Riots, Unlawful Assembly

Unlawful Assembly (BNS S.189): Five or more persons assembled to commit an act to overawe the State or resist judicial processes — equivalent to IPC S.141; every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence under S.190.

Rioting (BNS S.191): Members of unlawful assembly using force/violence — equivalent to IPC S.146/147; RI up to 2 years; armed rioting — up to 3 years.

Affray (BNS S.192): Two or more persons fighting in a public place causing public terror — equivalent to IPC S.159/160.

9.2 Public Nuisance

Public Nuisance (BNS S.270): Acts causing common injury, danger or annoyance — equivalent to IPC S.268. Specific nuisances: epidemic disease (S.271), quarantine rules (S.272), adulteration of food (S.273–274).
