6.1 Structure and Hierarchy

Rajasthan Police functions under the Home Department and the Rajasthan Police Act, 2007 (replacing the old Police Act of 1861).

Hierarchy of Rajasthan Police:

Director General of Police (DGP) — State HQ, Jaipur

6.2 Rajasthan Police Ranges

Rajasthan is divided into police ranges (corresponding roughly to divisions):

  1. Jaipur Range
  2. Jodhpur Range
  3. Bikaner Range
  4. Ajmer Range
  5. Kota Range
  6. Udaipur Range
  7. Bharatpur Range

Special units: Crime Investigation Department (CID), Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Special Operations Group (SOG), Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC), Railway Police, Traffic Police.

6.3 Control Over Police

  • Political control: CM and Home Minister set policy; SP is answerable to District Collector for law and order (administrative control).
  • Judicial control: Courts exercise control through writs, bail orders, directions.
  • Lokayukta: Can investigate complaints against police officials.
  • National Human Rights Commission (NHRC): Reviews complaints of custodial deaths, rights violations.

Rajasthan Police Act 2007 — A progressive reform act that replaced the colonial Police Act 1861. Key provisions:

  • Created State Police Board to oversee police functioning.
  • Ensured fixed 2-year minimum tenure for DGP.
  • Provided for separation of investigation from law and order duties at station level.
  • Established a Police Complaints Authority at state and district levels.
