Introduction and Syllabus Scope
The RPSC 2026 syllabus places this topic in Paper II, Unit 3 (Earth Science/Geography), Part C. The examiner expects two distinct competencies: demographic analysis (interpreting Census 2011 data — density, growth, literacy, sex ratio at district level) and tribal ethnography (names, distribution, customs, administrative status of Rajasthan's major tribes). Generic India-level population theory scores nothing here — district-specific extremes, tribal customs, and government schemes for tribes are what RPSC actually tests.
The topic's PYQ Tier 2 status means it appears in roughly 3 of every 5 exams, predominantly as 5-mark questions (factual recall: "Name the most densely populated district," "Which tribe is Rajasthan's only PVTG?"). The 10-mark questions, when asked, tend toward analytical territory: comparing tribal sub-plans, discussing demographic dividend challenges, or analyzing literacy gaps.
Scope boundaries: Census 2011 data is the primary reference (Census 2021 was delayed; the Rajasthan government conducted its own household survey in 2022 but results are not the RPSC official reference). For tribal history and ancient origins, see Topic #8 (Tribes — Historical Perspective). For how physiography shapes population distribution (e.g., Thar Desert = low density), see Topic #83. For skill development and employment policy for tribal youth, see Topic #37.
The August 2023 district reorganization (19 new districts, total now 50) is highly likely to appear in 2026 Mains. Know the new district names and their parent districts. Key tribal schemes (PM Jan Man Yojana 2023, EMRS schools, Van Dhan Vikash Kendras) should also be integrated into any question on tribal welfare.
