Rabi Crops of Rajasthan

Rabi crops are sown in October–November and harvested in March–April. Rajasthan's Rabi productivity surpasses Kharif, particularly in irrigated eastern and northern zones. The state holds dominant national positions in mustard, barley, and spice crops.

5.1 Mustard / Rapeseed

Mustard and Rapeseed (/ , Brassica juncea / napus) is Rajasthan's single most important Rabi crop by both area and national significance. Rajasthan is India's #1 mustard producer, contributing approximately 46.13% of India's total rapeseed-mustard production (Rajasthan Economic Review 2025-26).

  • Districts: Bharatpur, Alwar, Jaipur, Sikar, Ajmer, Karauli, Tonk, Dausa, Sawai Madhopur — eastern Rajasthan dominates
  • National context: India is the world's 4th largest rapeseed producer; Rajasthan's dominance makes it the backbone of India's edible oil supply
  • Processing: Rajasthan has a substantial mustard oil crushing industry; Alwar and Bharatpur are major mustard mandi centres
  • Government policy: MSP for mustard (₹5,650/quintal for 2024-25) incentivises cultivation; PM-OILSEED scheme promotes oilseed self-reliance

The rabi 2026 heat wave (February–March 2026 was India's third driest February since 1901, temperatures 8–13°C above normal) significantly threatened mustard yields in Rajasthan, demonstrating the crop's vulnerability to climate stress at the grain-filling stage.

5.2 Wheat

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is Rajasthan's primary food grain crop in Rabi. Rajasthan ranks approximately 5th–6th in India for wheat production (behind Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh).

  • Districts: Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bharatpur, Alwar, Jaipur, Sikar — highest production in irrigated zones
  • Constraint: Wheat requires assured irrigation; its area is limited by water availability
  • Varieties: K-9107, DBW-17, Raj 4038, WH-542 — state-recommended varieties for Rajasthan's conditions

5.3 Barley

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) — Rajasthan is India's #1 barley producing state, a position it has held consistently. Barley's competitive advantage in Rajasthan: it tolerates alkaline/saline soils, low water availability, and high temperatures better than wheat.

  • Districts: Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Dausa
  • Uses: Animal feed, malt production (beer/whiskey industry — Rajasthan's barley feeds malt units in Rajasthan and neighbouring states), barley flour (jau atta), and traditional Rajasthani food (rabdi, sattu)
  • Area: ~8–10 lakh hectares annually

5.4 Gram / Chickpea

Gram (Cicer arietinum) is India's most important pulse. Rajasthan ranks 3rd in India for gram production.

  • Districts: Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner, Nagaur, Churu, Barmer — northwestern and central Rajasthan
  • Types: Desi (brown, small-seeded) and Kabuli (white, large-seeded, premium-priced)
  • Significance: Primary protein source in Rajasthani rural diets; also used as besan (gram flour) for Rajasthani cuisine staples

5.5 Cumin

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) — Rajasthan is India's #1 cumin producing state, growing predominantly in Zone I-A (Jodhpur, Barmer, Jalore, Nagaur, Ajmer). India is the world's largest cumin producer, consumer, and exporter; Rajasthan and Gujarat together account for ~95% of Indian cumin production.

  • Rajasthan's share: ~30–35% of India's cumin area
  • Districts: Jodhpur, Barmer, Nagaur, Ajmer, Pali, Jalore
  • Market: Jodhpur and Bikaner are major cumin trading centres; Indian cumin exports to Middle East, EU, and USA

5.6 Coriander

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) — Rajasthan is India's #1 coriander producer. The Hadoti region (Baran, Jhalawar, Kota) is the primary coriander belt.

  • Districts: Baran, Jhalawar, Kota, Bundi — southeastern Rajasthan
  • National context: India is the world's largest coriander producer; Rajasthan dominates within India
  • Processing: Coriander is dried (dhaniya saboot), ground (dhaniya powder), and steam-distilled for essential oil

5.7 Rye Grass / Fenugreek

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) — Rajasthan is India's largest fenugreek producer, primarily in Nagaur, Sikar, Ajmer, Barmer. Nagaur is India's largest fenugreek mandi. India dominates global fenugreek export.
