SEZs, Industrial Corridors, and Special Zones

Special Economic Zones (SEZs)

A Special Economic Zone is a geographically demarcated enclave with distinct regulatory and fiscal treatment — including duty-free imports of inputs, 100% FDI, and income tax benefits — to promote export-oriented manufacturing and services. Rajasthan has two operational SEZs of national significance:

1. Mahindra World City, Jaipur (MWCJ)

  • India's first integrated business city model SEZ.
  • Location: Kalwara, Ajmer Road, Jaipur.
  • Area: 3,000+ acres across three zones — SEZ (manufacturing), Domestic Tariff Area (DTA), and Lifestyle Zone.
  • Sectors: IT & ITeS (including offices of Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys), auto components, apparel and fashion.
  • Employment: 35,000+ direct employment.
  • Developer: Mahindra World City Developers Ltd. (MWCDL).

2. JNIP SEZ / Jodhpur Industrial Area

  • Sector focus: Handicrafts, textiles, food processing.
  • Alignment with WDFC for logistics connectivity.

Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)

The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is India's flagship industrial corridor project, running 1,483 km from Dadri (UP) to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Mumbai), passing through Rajasthan for approximately 650 km.

Rajasthan's DMIC districts (from north to south): Alwar → Dausa → Sawai Madhopur → Kota → Bundi → Chittorgarh.

The DMIC alignment in Rajasthan follows the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), enabling rail-freight logistics. Planned industrial nodes in Rajasthan:

Node District Development Status
Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana (KBN) Alwar Operational (existing industrial base)
Rajasthan Industrial Development Area (RIDA), Neemrana Alwar Under development
Integrated Industrial Township, Kota Kota Planning stage

The DMIC project is developed by the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Ltd. (DMICDC), a joint venture between the Government of India (49%) and Japan Bank for International Cooperation / JBIC (49%). See Topic #36 for infrastructure details on the WDFC.

Neemrana Japanese Investment Zone

The Neemrana Japanese Investment Zone in Alwar district is one of India's two dedicated Japanese industrial townships (the other being in Andhra Pradesh). Established under a bilateral framework between Government of India and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

Key facts:

  • Location: Neemrana and Ghilot areas, Alwar district, approximately 100 km from Delhi.
  • Japanese companies established: 50+, including:
    • Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) — Tapukara plant
    • Daikin Air Conditioning India — largest air conditioner plant in India
    • Toyoda Gosei
    • Suzuki Motor
    • Panasonic, Kyocera, Canon
  • Employment: 40,000+ direct and indirect jobs.
  • Investment attracted: ¥200 billion+ (approximately ₹12,000 crore equivalent).

The Neemrana zone's success demonstrates the capacity of location-based incentives (DMIC proximity, Delhi-NCR market access, RIICO land at subsidized rates) to attract quality FDI. It is a frequently cited example in RPSC questions on FDI and industrial clusters.
