Key Industrial Clusters: Cement, Textiles, Handicrafts, Automobiles

Cement Industry

Rajasthan is India's #1 cement-producing state, accounting for approximately 13-15% of India's total cement production capacity. The industry is grounded in the state's vast limestone deposits (See Topic #88 for mineral resources).

Major cement clusters:

  • Chittorgarh: ACC, Ambuja, J.K. Cement, Shree Cement.
  • Nagaur (Nimbahera): J.K. White Cement (only white cement plant in India), Star Cement.
  • Sawai Madhopur: Birla Cement (currently Ultratech).
  • Sirohi: Birla White.
  • Ajmer: Shree Cement (Beawar plant — one of the largest single-location cement plants in India).

Why Rajasthan dominates: Limestone deposits (world-class grade, high CaCO₃ content), gypsum availability (Bikaner, Barmer), coal-equivalent energy from imported coal and petcoke, and strong infrastructure connectivity to northern and western India markets.

Key indicator: The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for Rajasthan stood at 157.31 (general index, November 2024, base year 2011-12=100), reflecting broad industrial growth above base levels. Source: Rajasthan Economic Review 2025-26, Chapter 5.

Textile Industry

Bhilwara — Suiting Capital of India:

  • Located on the Ajmer-Udaipur rail-road axis.
  • 1 million+ ring-spinning spindles (one of the highest spindle concentrations in South Asia).
  • 100,000+ power looms producing synthetic suiting, shirting, and dress material.
  • Major companies: Bhilwara Group (LNJ Bhilwara), RSWM Ltd., BSL Ltd., Syntex Industries.
  • Annual turnover of the Bhilwara textile cluster: approximately ₹25,000-30,000 crore.
  • Employment: 3 lakh+ direct workers.

Pali — Textile Processing Hub:

  • India's largest textile processing (dyeing, printing, bleaching) centre outside Surat.
  • 3,000+ textile dyeing and printing units.
  • Key concern: industrial effluent into Bandi River — a recurring environmental and policy issue (National Green Tribunal orders, CETP mandates).

Jodhpur — Khadi and Handloom:

  • Jodhpur and surrounding areas produce traditional wool-based products (Durriya, Gabba).

Barmer — Ajrakh Printing:

  • Traditional block-print textiles (Ajrakh, Malir printing) — GI-tagged products with export value.

Handicrafts Industry

Automobile and Engineering Cluster

The Alwar-Bhiwadi-Neemrana belt is Rajasthan's most significant automobile and engineering cluster, driven by proximity to Delhi-NCR and DMIC infrastructure:

  • Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), Tapukara: 2.4 million units/year capacity.
  • Hero MotoCorp, Tapukara: one of the largest two-wheeler plants in India.
  • Daikin Air Conditioning, Neemrana: 1 million+ units/year.
  • Kota: engineering goods, chemical sector (Eastern Rajasthan Chemical Zone).
