Tourism Circuits in Rajasthan
Concept of Tourism Circuits
A tourism circuit connects multiple destinations that a tourist visits on a single trip, reducing per-attraction marketing costs and extending average stay duration. Rajasthan's circuit approach emerged from the Ministry of Tourism's PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan schemes, which fund circuit infrastructure including signage, interpretation centres, and last-mile connectivity.
Four Major Circuits
**1. Desert Circuit **
Covers: Jaisalmer – Bikaner – Barmer – Nagaur
Anchor attraction: Jaisalmer Fort (UNESCO); Sam Sand Dunes; Camel Safari routes
Unique element: Only desert-based cultural circuit in India
RTDC infrastructure: Moomal Tourist Bungalow chain; camel safari operators licensed by RTDC
Tourism note: Jaisalmer's living fort hosts ~3,000 residents and receives 4 lakh+ visitors annually; carrying capacity concerns are a recurring conservation issue.
Covers: Udaipur – Chittorgarh – Kumbhalgarh – Rajsamand – Nathdwara
Anchor attractions: City of Lakes (Udaipur); Chittorgarh Fort (UNESCO); Ranakpur temples
Religious sub-circuit: Nathdwara (Sri Nathji temple, one of India's wealthiest temples by offerings) attracts 20+ lakh pilgrims annually.
The Mewar International Festival (Gangaur, March–April) is a key tourism draw coordinated by RTDC.
Covers: Kota – Bundi – Baran – Jhalawar
Anchor attractions: Bundi's step-wells and painted palaces; Gagron Fort (UNESCO); Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (4th in Rajasthan)
Cultural identity: Hadoti painting school, Bundi miniatures; step-well architecture (Raniji ki Baori)
Under-touristed: Despite UNESCO listing (Gagron), the Hadoti circuit receives the fewest visitors among the four — an exam-relevant conservation vs. development tension.
Covers: Jhunjhunu – Sikar – Churu – Nawalgarh – Mandawa – Fatehpur
Anchor attraction: Open-air fresco havelis — 1,000+ painted mansions built by Marwari merchants, 18th–19th centuries
UNESCO potential: Under evaluation for tentative listing as serial nomination of painted havelis
Conservation crisis: Many havelis are in private ownership with absentee landlords; an estimated 200+ are in advanced decay (ASI-Rajasthan State Survey, 2022)
Additional Circuits
The Ministry of Tourism also designates thematic circuits in Rajasthan under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme:
