REET Level 1 study notes

Four Operations, Factors, Multiples and Fractions for REET L1 Mathematics

The four operations, factors, multiples and fractions form the largest number-related unit in REET Level 1 mathematics. It covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers from Classes I to V, regrouping with carry and borrow, Class V ideas such as factors, multiples, prime numbers, HCF and LCM, and the full early-fraction family: proper, improper and mixed fractions, equivalent fractions, comparison, and addition or subtraction of like and unlike fractions. REET expects the teacher to identify children's common errors in each area and suggest the correct concrete activity, not merely repeat a formal algorithm.

Key points

  • Class 1-5 builds the four operations slowly: count, regroup, column algorithm, word problems, mental strategies.
  • Three-digit subtraction across a zero needs a multi-step borrow from the hundreds digit.
  • Class 5 introduces factors, multiples, prime numbers, highest common factor and lowest common multiple.
  • Proper, improper, and mixed fractions are classified by comparing numerator and denominator.
  • Like fractions add by keeping the denominator; unlike fractions need a common denominator first.
