REET Level 2 study notes

Number System - Integers and Rational Numbers

For REET Level 2, number system means knowing how natural numbers, whole numbers, integers and rational numbers are related, how they behave under operations, and how a teacher diagnoses learner errors with signs, zero, denominator 0 and the number line. The exam value lies in properties, examples, counterexamples and classroom response, not in advanced real-number theory.

Key points

  • Natural numbers count from 1; whole numbers add 0; integers add negative numbers.
  • A rational number is writable as p/q with integer p and q, and q not equal to 0.
  • Integers are closed under addition, subtraction and multiplication, but not ordinary division.
  • Rational numbers are closed under division only when the divisor is non-zero.
  • Use the number line to compare negative numbers and locate fractions between integers.
  • Teach properties through examples and counterexamples, not through chants.
  • Mark authored classroom activities separately from verified RBSE or NCERT source claims.
