History — Ancient → Medieval → Modern

Keoladeo Reserve

Keoladeo was developed in a natural depression wetland that was managed as a duck shooting reserve at the end of the 19th century, and it was declared a national park in 1982.

Excavation Sites

Archaeological excavations have been carried out in Bharatpur district at Noh, Bachhawa Mandi, Bayana, Kaman, Rupbas and Aghapur.

Historic Fort

In Bharatpur city's north-western part stands a historical masonry stone fort of square dimensions with high walls, surrounded by a moat about 61 metres wide.

Bayana Heritage

Bayana is about 45 km south by south-west of Bharatpur and is associated with Vijaygarh fort, Bhim Lat, and the ancient names Sripatha or Shriprastha.

Museum Establishment

Established on 11 November 1944, the Government Museum, Bharatpur is located in the centre of the historic Lohagarh Fort.

Princely Collection

Artefacts collected from various parts of the Bharatpur princely state were initially displayed in a public library under Maharaja Sawai Brijendra Singh in 1939.

Fort Museum Shift

In 1944, the Bharatpur museum collection was moved to the Kachahri Kalan building in Lohagarh Fort, which was later converted into a museum.

Balwant Singh Buildings

Flood-Prone Plain

Bharatpur is placed in the Flood-prone Eastern Plain, where major crops are Bajra, Guar and Groundnut in kharif and Wheat, Barley, Mustard and Gram in rabi.

Keoladeo National Park is an important wintering ground of Palaearctic migratory waterfowl and has large congregations of non-migratory resident breeding birds.

Migratory Flyway

Because Keoladeo lies in the middle of the Central Asian migratory flyway and has water, ducks, geese, coots, pelicans and waders arrive there in winter.

Wintering Habitat

Keoladeo was the only known wintering site of the central population of the critically endangered Siberian Crane and also winters globally threatened Greater Spotted Eagle and Imperial Eagle.

Breeding Heronry

In the breeding season, Keoladeo forms a major heronry with 15 species of herons, ibis, cormorants, spoonbills and storks; in a well-flooded year over 20,000 birds nest.

Managed Wetlands

Keoladeo wetlands are not natural; they depend on the monsoon and on water pumped from outside, traditionally from the Ajan Bandh reservoir.

Wetland Pressures

UNESCO identifies Keoladeo's major threats as water supply quantity and quality, invasive vegetation such as Prosopis, Eichhornia and Paspalum, and inappropriate use by neighbouring villages.
