RAS question

When was the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan inaugurated at Jodhpur?

Correct answer: (D) 29 August 1949.

The Rajasthan High Court was established at Jodhpur on 29 August 1949, when the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan was inaugurated.

  1. (A)

    21 June 1949

  2. (B)

    1 November 1956

  3. (C)

    26 January 1950

  4. (D)

    29 August 1949

Explanation

The date to remember is 29 August 1949. The official e-Committee history says that, after the princely states of Rajputana were integrated into Rajasthan, the Rajasthan High Court Ordinance, 1949 abolished the five earlier High Courts at Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur and Alwar. In their place, the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan was inaugurated at Jodhpur by Rajpramukh Maharaja Sawai Man Singh on 29.08.1949, and oath was administered to 11 judges. The later constitutional and reorganisation dates came after the 29 August 1949 establishment of the Rajasthan High Court.

Why the other options are wrong

  • (A) 21 June 1949 is not the date on which the official history says the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan was inaugurated at Jodhpur.
  • (B) 1 November 1956 belongs to the states reorganisation context, while the Rajasthan High Court had already been inaugurated on 29 August 1949.
  • (C) 26 January 1950 marks the enforcement of the Constitution of India, after which the judges' strength was reduced, not the original inauguration of the Rajasthan High Court.

Concept

Rajasthan polity includes the institutional history of the State judiciary. RAS often repeats such dates because they connect state integration, court administration and constitutional development.
