Maruti Suzuki officially launched the Wagon R Flex Fuel India first flex fuel passenger car in New Delhi with the launch reported in PIB on 5 June 2026. The launch was held in the presence of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The Wagon R flex fuel can run on ethanol petrol blends ranging from E20 to E100 with the engine automatically detecting the ethanol content in the fuel and adjusting itself accordingly without driver intervention. Minister Puri positioned the launch as a milestone in India broader vision of turning farmers from food providers into energy providers under the Ethanol Blending Programme noting that flex fuel vehicles reduce crude oil import dependence save valuable foreign exchange lower vehicular emissions and create new opportunities for rural prosperity through procurement of sugarcane molasses maize and damaged grains. India achieved 20 per cent ethanol blending by mid 2025 ahead of the 2025 26 target and now seeks pathways to E27 and beyond. The Wagon R Flex Fuel has initially been made available for the commercial sector specifically fleet operators cab aggregators and other commercial use cases rather than private buyers. Nitin Gadkari emphasised that flex fuel vehicles will play a critical role in India transition to sustainable mobility complementing electric vehicles compressed natural gas and hydrogen and contributing to the Atmanirbhar Bharat goals for the automotive sector.
