Bulgaria became the 21st country to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026, replacing the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. The EU approved Bulgaria's accession on July 8, 2025. A dual currency period runs through January 2026, with the lev ceasing to be legal tender from February 1, 2026. The Bulgarian National Bank joined the ECB's Eurosystem and its Governor gained a seat on the ECB Governing Council. However, 49% of Bulgarians opposed the switch according to Eurobarometer surveys, fearing price rises.
