On 13 July 2026, the 63-kilometre Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway was inaugurated by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Alongside the expressway, the leaders inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for three National Highway projects worth more than Rs 4,850 crore, marking a major boost to road infrastructure in the state.

The new expressway is expected to cut the travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to around 45 to 50 minutes, easing the movement of passengers and freight between the two important urban centres of Uttar Pradesh. Beyond the immediate corridor, the project is designed to strengthen regional connectivity: it improves access to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi through the Jhansi and Agra routes, and links to Bihar and Nepal via the Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor.

Rajnath Singh, who represents Lucknow in the Lok Sabha, was also scheduled to attend the convocation ceremony at King George's Medical University (KGMU) during his visit. Security arrangements for the event were coordinated by Unnao Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash Singh.

The combined package of the expressway and the accompanying highway projects reflects the continuing emphasis on expanding high-speed road networks in Uttar Pradesh, which is expected to support economic activity, trade and tourism across the region and its neighbouring states.
