On 04 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared open the 1st World Yogasana Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad through video conferencing, in an event organised under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated that 78 countries and over 500 athletes took part in this first edition of the championship, with delegations arriving from more than 60 nations. He set out an ambition for Yogasana to become part of the Commonwealth Games of 2030, which will be hosted by India, and the Olympics of 2036, also to be hosted by India. The Prime Minister urged the participating athletes to become ambassadors of the Ministry of Ayush's 'Yoga Three Sixty Five' campaign, encouraging the practice of yoga throughout the year. The opening ceremony was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Minister of State Harsh Sanghavi, and World Yogasana President Swami Ramdev. The championship marks a significant step in positioning Yogasana as a competitive sporting discipline on the international stage, linking India's heritage of yoga with structured global athletic competition and the country's ambitions to host major multi-sport events in the coming decade.
