The Union Cabinet approved Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2 for Line 4 and Line 4A. Line 4 is linked to the Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla route, while Line 4A is linked to the Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug route. Together, the two lines will span 31.636 km and have 28 fully elevated stations. The estimated cost is ₹9,857.85 crore, and the project is targeted for completion within five years.

Pune is counted as India's 8th largest metro, so the decision is not only a local transport update; it is also a current-affairs issue connected with urban governance, public investment, and economic infrastructure. The lines will connect information-technology hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune. For exam preparation, this helps link metro projects with travel time, road pressure, safety, and sustainable urban mobility.

The financing pattern is important. The project is to be jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral funding agencies. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited will implement it. The official release places Lines 4 and 4A within Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and notes integration with operational or sanctioned corridors at Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop, and Swargate. The interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station also connects the project with rail, metro, and bus networks. For RAS and UPSC, the topic can be studied under urbanisation, Centre-state financing, infrastructure, economy, and the static-GK role of metro transport.
