The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 was awarded jointly to Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia) and Omar M. Yaghi (Jordan/USA) for the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The announcement was made on October 8, 2025 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Susumu Kitagawa, born 1951, is Professor at Kyoto University, Japan. Richard Robson, born 1937 in Glusburn, UK, is Professor at University of Melbourne, Australia. Omar M. Yaghi, born 1965 in Amman, Jordan, is Professor at University of California, Berkeley, USA.

Metal-organic frameworks are molecular constructions with enormous internal surface areas through which gases and other chemicals can flow. They are created by linking metal ions with organic molecules to form porous, crystalline structures. These materials can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, store toxic gases safely, or catalyse chemical reactions. The prize amount was 11 million Swedish kronor, shared equally.
