A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Udalguri district, Assam at 4:41 PM IST on September 14, 2025. The epicentre was located 11 km NNE of Kharupatia at a depth of approximately 5 km (USGS registered M5.5 at 29 km depth). Tremors were felt across Assam, West Bengal, Meghalaya, and parts of Bangladesh and Bhutan.

A total of 116 people reported shaking across 31 locations in 3 countries. Calculated intensities ranged from II to VI on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale within 0-300 km of the epicentre. Two aftershocks of M3.1 and M2.9 followed. No loss of life or significant property damage was reported. Assam lies in Seismic Zone V, the highest risk zone in India.
