IIT Madras deployed India's first Indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. The system enhances maritime security, port safety, and reduces India's dependence on foreign technology for critical maritime infrastructure.

VTMS monitors and manages vessel movements within a port area using radar, AIS (Automatic Identification System), cameras, and communication equipment. The indigenous system was developed to replace expensive foreign-made VTMS solutions. Vizhinjam International Seaport is India's first deepwater container transshipment port, located close to major international shipping routes. The deployment is part of India's broader initiative to achieve self-reliance in maritime technology under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
