A rare Asian caracal, a nocturnal wild cat, was photographed in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, offering renewed hope for the species' survival in India. This is among the very few confirmed recent sightings of the elusive feline in the country.

The caracal prefers bush-covered dryland ecosystems with low disturbance and hunts rodents, small mammals, and birds. In India, it is found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, particularly in semi-arid scrublands and the Thar Desert region. While listed as IUCN Least Concern globally, the caracal is listed under CITES Appendix I (threatened with extinction) and Schedule I of India's Wildlife Protection Act (highest protection level). Estimated to number fewer than 50 in India.
