The Civil Registration System (CRS) Report for 2023 recorded 2.52 crore births, a decline of 2.32 lakh from 2022, alongside 86.6 lakh registered deaths. The national sex ratio at birth remains skewed, with Bihar recording 900 and Jharkhand 899 while Arunachal Pradesh leads at 1,085.

Overall registration coverage reached 98.4%, with 74.7% of births being institutional (hospital-based). Eleven States and UTs achieved over 90% timely registration within 21 days. The declining birth trend reflects improved education, urbanisation, and family planning access. Rajasthan's birth registration rate has improved significantly, reaching 97.8% in 2023, up from 89.2% in 2018, aided by the state's Aadhaar-linked birth registration initiative.
