Positive Organisational Scholarship (POS)
7.1 Overview
Kim Cameron, Jane Dutton, and Robert Quinn (2003, Positive Organizational Scholarship) at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business developed POS as an umbrella framework studying positive organisational phenomena:
- Virtuous organisations: Organisations that practice forgiveness, compassion, gratitude, and integrity
- Positive deviance: Being well above normal standards (not just average performance)
- Resilience: Bouncing back from adversity — and bouncing forward (growing stronger)
- Thriving: The combination of vitality and learning — feeling alive and growing
7.2 High-Quality Connections (HQCs)
Jane Dutton (2003) coined High-Quality Connections (HQCs) — brief, positive interactions at work that energise both parties. Characteristics:
- Both parties feel vitality and aliveness after the interaction
- Positive regard and sense of being known
- Sense of mutuality (not one-sided)
HQCs are brief — even a 5-minute conversation can be a High-Quality Connection. They predict organisational flourishing by building networks of generative energy. A district officer who acknowledges field workers' efforts in routine interactions creates HQCs that sustain morale and performance.
