Tourism Infrastructure

4.1 Rajasthan State Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC)

Rajasthan State Tourism Development Corporation is the state government's nodal tourism enterprise. Established 1979, RTDC:

  • Operates 53 hotels and tourism units across 38 districts, including iconic properties: Castle Mandawa, Jaisalmer Moomal, Pushkar's Hotel Sarovar.
  • Manages Palace on Wheels and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels luxury trains.
  • Runs tourist reception centres at Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Ajmer, Kota, Bikaner, and Bharatpur.
  • Organises the Desert Festival (Jaisalmer), Elephant Festival (Jaipur, Holi season), and Brij Holi Mahotsav (Bharatpur).
  • Publishes multilingual tourist guides and manages the rajasthan.tourism.gov.in portal.

Palace on Wheels is ranked among the world's top 10 luxury train journeys by multiple international travel publications. It serves approximately 1,000–1,500 tourists per season (October–March). After COVID disruption (2020–22), demand recovered sharply in 2023–24.

4.3 Heritage Hotels

The heritage hotel category was pioneered in India by Rajasthan's palace conversions. The Heritage Hotels Association of India (HHAI) classifies heritage hotels into:

  • Heritage Grand (palatial structures built pre-1935): Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur), Rambagh Palace (Jaipur), Lake Palace (Udaipur)
  • Heritage Classic (structures built 1935–1950)
  • Heritage Basic (smaller havelis, hunting lodges, estates)

Rajasthan has over 100 classified heritage hotels across these three categories — the largest concentration in India. Heritage hotels generate premium room tariffs (₹5,000–₹5 lakh/night), employ local artisans, and preserve architectural assets without government expenditure. The Rajasthan Tourism Policy 2020 streamlined conversion approvals for heritage properties to encourage further conversions.

Key palace hotels: Taj Lake Palace (Udaipur, est. 1743), Rambagh Palace (Jaipur, built 1835, opened as hotel 1957), Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur, completed 1943, partial hotel since 1972), Samode Palace (Jaipur), Deogarh Mahal (Rajsamand).

4.4 Airport and Transport Infrastructure

  • International airports: Jaipur (Sanganer — international since 1996), Udaipur (Maharana Pratap — international for chartered/regional international), Jodhpur (civil-cum-military airport).
  • Domestic airports: Bikaner (Nal), Jaisalmer, Kota, Ajmer (proposed).
  • Rajasthan State Highways: The Golden Triangle (Delhi–Jaipur–Agra) connects to a tourist superhighway; NH-48 (Delhi–Jaipur–Ajmer), NH-58, NH-27 form key tourism corridors.
  • Rajasthan Roadways (RSRTC) operates Volvo luxury tourist bus services on key circuits.
  • Ropeway projects: Approved for Amber Fort (Jaipur), Alwar, and Jaisalmer Fort to reduce pressure on foot traffic and improve accessibility.

4.5 Digital Tourism Initiatives

  • Rajasthan Tourism Mobile App: Available in 6 languages; integrates GPS-based heritage trail navigation, AR overlays at Amber Fort, and real-time hotel booking.
  • Virtual Tour Platform: 360° virtual tours of 15 major heritage sites (launched 2021) to attract pre-visit interest.
  • e-Visa facilitation: Rajasthan Tourism promoted e-Tourist Visa for Jaipur and Udaipur among target markets (UK, Germany, France, USA, Japan, Australia).
  • Social media campaigns: #ExploreRajasthan and #PadhaaroMhaareDes campaigns on Instagram, YouTube; RTDC YouTube channel has 500,000+ subscribers (2024).
