Industrial Uses and Downstream Linkages
4.1 Cement Industry
Cement is Rajasthan's single largest mineral-based industry by investment and output. Rajasthan has the largest limestone reserves in India suitable for cement manufacture. The Aravalli and Vindhyan formations provide cement-grade limestone across Chittorgarh, Sirohi, Jodhpur, Pali, and Nagaur.
Major cement plants in Rajasthan: Shree Cement (Beawar/Ajmer and Ras/Pali), Ambuja Cement (Rabriyawas, Pali), ACC (Lakheri, Bundi), J.K. Cement (Nimbahera, Chittorgarh), Ultratech Cement (Aditya Birla — multiple plants), and Birla Corporation (Chittorgarh). Rajasthan accounts for approximately 12-15% of India's total installed cement capacity. The mineral chain: limestone + gypsum (retarder) + clinker → cement. Rajasthan supplies both. This is why the cement industry concentrates in Rajasthan despite the distance from coastal ports.
4.2 Zinc Smelting and the HZL Complex
Hindustan Zinc Limited's vertically integrated operations represent one of India's most sophisticated mineral-to-metal value chains entirely within Rajasthan:
- Mining: Zawar (Udaipur), Agucha (Bhilwara), Sindesar Khurd (Rajsamand), Rajpura-Dariba (Bhilwara) → sulphide ore
- Concentration: Flotation plants at each mine site → zinc concentrate, lead concentrate, silver residues
- Smelting (pyrometallurgy/hydrometallurgy): Chanderiya smelter (Chittorgarh) — largest zinc-lead smelter in India; Debari (Udaipur) — zinc smelter; Dariba (Rajsamand) — zinc smelter
- Refined metal: LME-grade zinc (99.995% purity), lead, silver, cadmium by-product
- Wind/Solar: HZL has invested in captive renewable energy across Rajasthan
HZL contributes massively to Rajasthan's GSDP and national zinc security. India is the world's 4th largest zinc producer by volume, entirely on account of HZL-Rajasthan operations. Zinc is critical for galvanisation (steel corrosion protection), die-casting, and zinc oxide (rubber industry).
4.3 Fertilizer Industry: Rock Phosphate Linkage
The Jhamarkotra rock phosphate deposits directly feed India's phosphate fertilizer chain:
- Rock phosphate → acidulation with sulfuric acid → Single Superphosphate (SSP) at Kota, Udaipur, and other SSP plants
- Rock phosphate → export to phosphoric acid plants elsewhere → DAP/MAP precursors
- India imports ~90% of phosphatic fertilizer raw material; Jhamarkotra reduces import dependency
Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals (Kota) — one of India's largest private fertilizer companies — is closely linked to Rajasthan's mineral base, though it primarily uses imported phosphoric acid + domestic ammonia for DAP/urea.
4.4 Ceramic and Glass Industries
The ceramic industry in Bikaner (sanitary ware), Jaipur, and Khurja (UP, which sources Rajasthan clay) depends on:
- Ball Clay (Bikaner, Barmer) — primary clay body material for sanitaryware, floor tiles
- Feldspar (Ajmer, Bhilwara, Alwar) — glass-forming flux; reduces melting temperature
- Quartz/Silica sand — glass body material
- Steatite/Soapstone — used in electrical insulation ceramics
The Morbi (Gujarat) ceramic tile industry — Asia's largest — also sources feldspar, clay, and silica from Rajasthan, making Rajasthan an industrial mineral supplier to Gujarat's manufacturing hub.
4.5 Dimensional Stone Industry
Rajasthan's dimensional stone sector (marble, granite, sandstone, slate, quartzite) is a major foreign exchange earner:
- Makrana Marble → Premium export to Middle East, Europe; used in luxury construction
- Jodhpur Sandstone → Parliamentary, heritage restoration projects; significant export
- Kota Stone (Kota limestone) → Gulf, Europe; used in flooring
- Granite (Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer) → Global export; Rajasthan ranks among top granite-producing states
Kishangarh (Ajmer district) is Asia's largest marble processing hub, with hundreds of processing units. India is among the top 5 global marble exporters.
4.6 Garnet: Abrasive and Gemstone Applications
Rajasthan produces ~90–95% of India's garnet output, primarily from the Rajmahal-Tonk-Ajmer-Sawai Madhopur belt. Two commercially significant types are found:
- Almandine garnet (iron-aluminium silicate) — hardness 7.5–8.5 Mohs → abrasive blasting, waterjet cutting, sandpaper manufacture
- Grossular garnet (hessonite variety) — gemstone quality; semi-precious stone export
India is one of the world's top 3 garnet exporters. Garnet abrasives are used in shipbuilding (hull cleaning), water filtration media, and precision metal machining.
