Railway Infrastructure: Connectivity and Modernisation

4.1 North Western Railway Zone

Rajasthan is primarily served by North Western Railway (NWR), headquartered at Jaipur — carved out of Western Railway in October 2002. It covers four administrative divisions: Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.

NWR network statistics (2023-24):

  • Route km: approximately 5,784 km (covering Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat/Haryana)

  • Modern passenger amenities, roof plazas, and better accessibility
  • Rooftop solar panels and improved platforms
  • Priority stations: Jaipur Junction, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner, Alwar

4.3 Semi-High Speed and DEMU/MEMU Services

Vande Bharat Express trains now serve key Rajasthan corridors:

  • Jaipur–Delhi Cantt. Vande Bharat (inaugurated February 2023)
  • Jodhpur–Sabarmati Vande Bharat
  • Ajmer–Delhi Cantt. Vande Bharat
  • Jaipur–Udaipur corridor

Udaipur–Ahmedabad Rail Corridor (under planning/DPR stage): 155 km semi-high speed corridor connecting Rajasthan's heritage capital to Gujarat's commercial capital and GIFT City. Would reduce journey time from 3 hours to under 1 hour.

DEMU/MEMU services: NWR operates Diesel EMU and Mainline EMU trains on suburban and regional corridors — Jaipur suburban, Ajmer-Jaipur, Kota suburban — improving last-mile connectivity for daily commuters.

Jaipur International Airport — Terminal 2 (T2): New terminal developed under PPP concession to Adani Airport Holdings. T2 has tripled passenger handling capacity to approximately 5 million passengers per year, with automated baggage handling, aerobridges, and retail. T2 was inaugurated in phases in 2023-24.

UDAN Scheme (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik): Kota, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Kishangarh airports received connectivity under UDAN at capped fares (~₹2,500 per seat per hour of flying), enabling affordable air travel to Rajasthan's tier-2 cities.
