Bairat Buddhist Heritage

Viratnagar - the medieval name for Bairat in the new Kotputli-Behror district - was the capital of the Iron Age Matsya kingdom and a major Mauryan-era Buddhist centre; the hill called Bijak-ki-Pahari preserves the foundations of a third-century-BCE circular shrine often described as among the oldest free-standing Buddhist structures in India, and the Calcutta-Bairat (Bhabru) rock edict found here records emperor Ashoka's personal devotion to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha.

Behror 1857 Legacy

Behror sits in the Ahirwati-speaking Rath belt of southern Kotputli-Behror district and remembers Pran Sukh Yadav (1802-1888) of Nihalpura village, a former officer of the Sikh Khalsa Army who, after the Anglo-Sikh wars, trained the Ahir militias of Behror, Rewari and Narnaul and fought alongside Rao Tula Ram of Rewari at the Battle of Nasibpur in 1857; the Rath cattle fair held annually in May in this same belt continues the agro-pastoral traditions that fed those nineteenth-century militias.

Navratra Shakti Pilgrimage

On the Kotputli-Neem-ka-Thana road, the hilltop Sarund Mata Mandir at Saroond village - rising above the seasonal Sota river - draws large gatherings of devotees during the Chaitra and Ashvin Navratras, while the wider district is bracketed by the Mata Mansa Devi shrine at Hasampur near the Sikar boundary, whose nine-day Navratra melas attract pilgrims numbering in the lakhs and anchor the Shakti-worship calendar of the Kotputli-Behror countryside.
