Ajmer district derives its name from Ajmer city, the district headquarters. The Aravalli range passes through the district and divides the plains of Marwar from the high table-land of Mewar. Ajmer remained a centrally administered Part C state until 31 October 1956, when it merged with Rajasthan.

Early Habitation

Microlith finds at Khera and Kaderi indicate human habitation in the Ajmer area from the dawn of civilization.

Badli Inscription

The District Census Handbook records one of the earliest Brahmi inscriptions, described there as pre-Ashokan, from the Bhilot Mata temple at Badli village in Kekri tehsil.

Epic Pushkar

Pushkar is referenced in the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas.

Chauhan Lineage

The DCHB lists Chauhan rulers including Vasudev, Samant Raj, Durlabh Raj-I, Simha Raj, Vigraha Raj, Prithviraj and Ajai Raj up to the 12th century.

Ghori Invasion

In 1192 AD Mohammad Ghori attacked Ajmer and defeated Prithviraj Chauhan.

Chauhan Recovery

Hammir Dev Chauhan of Ranthambhor regained most of Ajmer district after Balban's death in 1287 AD.

Mughal Suba

Akbar made Ajmer the capital of an important suba of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century.

Changing Rule

Ajmer district remained under Mughal rule up to 1712 AD and then came under Rathors and Marathas.

British Cession

In 1801, General Perron's forces took Ajmer for Sindhia; in July 1818 it was ceded to the British Government.

Part C State

Ajmer was included as a Part C State under the Part C States Bill in 1951 and a legislature was set up.

Rajasthan Merger

Ajmer remained a centrally administered Part C state until 31 October 1956, when it merged with Rajasthan.

Kishangarh Integration

Kishangarh was made part of Ajmer district in 1956 when Ajmer was integrated with Rajasthan.

Pushkar Fair

Pushkar's Kartika Mela is held annually on Kartika Sudi 11-15 on the banks of Pushkar Lake.

Cattle Fair

A cattle fair is held at Pushkar during the Kartika fair period.

Khwaja Urs

The Urs of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti at Ajmer is held annually from the 1st to the 6th of Rajab.

Shared Devotion

Khwaja Sahib's shrine at Ajmer is venerated and visited by Hindus, Muslims and other Indians irrespective of religion.

Historic Mosque

Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra is at the foot of Taragarh hill and was converted into a mosque after Muhammad Ghori attacked Ajmer in 1192.

Dargah Complex

The Dargah Khwaja Sahib complex includes the mausoleum of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, two mosques, Mahfil Khana and Buland Darwaza.

Red Temple

Nasiyan, or the Red Temple, is a Digamber Jain temple in Ajmer whose foundation was laid in 1864 and whose main image was installed in 1865.

Central Location

Ajmer district is located in central Rajasthan between 25°38' and 26°58' north latitudes and 73°54' and 75°22' east longitudes.

District Boundaries

The DCHB bounds Ajmer district by Nagaur to the north, Bhilwara to the south, Jaipur and Tonk to the east, and Pali to the west.

Aravalli Divide

The Aravalli range passes through Ajmer district, dividing the plains of Marwar from the high table-land of Mewar.

Highest Point

The highest point near Ajmer city is about 870 metres above sea level and carries Taragarh Fort.

Drainage Divide

The hills between Ajmer and Nasirabad form a watershed: southern drainage reaches the Chambal and Bay of Bengal, while the other side drains by the Luni to the Gulf of Kutch.

Five rivers flow through Ajmer district: Banas, Khari, Sagarmati, Saraswati and Rupnagar.
